چکیده

The El Farol bar model, proposed to study the dynamics of competition of agents in a variety of contexts (W.) is studied. We characterize in detail the three regions of the phase diagram (efficient, better than random and inefficient) of the simplest version of the model (D. Challet and Y.-C. Zhang, Physica A, 246, 407 (1997)). The efficient region is shown to have a rich structure, which is investigated in some detail. Changes in the payoff function enhance further the tendency of the model towards a wasteful distribution of resources.

Exact solution of a modified El Farol’s bar problem

We discuss the Minority Game, a model of heterogeneous, indictive rational agents inspired by the El Farol Bar problem. We derive the exact solution of the model in the limit of infinitely many agents using tools of statistical physics of disordered systems. Our results show that the impact of agents on the collective behavior plays a key role: even though for each agent this effect is very sma...

Exact solution of a modified El Farol ’ s bar problem : Efficiency and the role of market impact Matteo Marsili

We discuss a model of heterogeneous, inductive rational agents inspired by the El Farol Bar problem and the Minority Game. As in markets, agents interact through a collective aggregate variable – which plays a role similar to price – whose value is fixed by all of them. Agents follow a simple reinforcement-learning dynamics where the reinforcement, for each of their available strategies, is rel...

When the El Farol Bar Problem Is Not a Problem? The Role of Social Preferences and Social Networks

In this paper, we study the self-coordination problem as demonstrated by the well-known El Farol Bar problem (Arthur, 1994), which later becomes what is known as the Minority Game in the econophysics community. While the El Farol problem or the minority game has been studied for almost two decades, existing studies are most concerned with efficiency only. The equality issue, however, has been l...

Learning in the Santa Fe Bar Problem

This paper investigates learning in the Santa Fe (El Farol) bar problem (sfbp). It is argued that rationality together with belief-based learning (e.g., Bayesian updating) yields unstable behavior in this game. More specifically, two conditions normally sufficient for convergence to Nash equilibrium, namely rationality and predictivity, are shown to be incompatible. Low-rationality learning alg...
